God’s people should witness of His goodness

I was reading in the Baptist Heritage the other day and came across this quote. For many today the argument is the new young and restless Reformed. The question historically was often the use of means or not in the ministry. The question in other words is do we invite people to Christ or simply wait on God to bring them.

That has caused great tension for many years and even now among many!

Tensions between Calvinistic and Arminian Baptists provoked schism when a later pastor, Alexander Hay, preached from the text, “God be merciful to us.” Hay’s thesis was that God uses the witness of redeemed persons to lead others to salvation, a concept not acceptable to Calvinistic church members.

McBeth, H. L. (1987). The Baptist heritage (332). Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman Publishers.

After reading the above quote I got the following in an email.

I just was at a missions conference at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Lebanon, IN.

It was founded in the mid 18 hundreds

They had a split in 1890 over “the use of mean for the evangelization of the heathen”. The old Mt. Tabor is a mile down the street from the new and they both retained the same name. The old one just added the word “primitive”.

They are both still meeting. The numbers are a bit different. The primitive church is still in their building from the 1800′s and run maybe 20 people. The new one runs about 220 in a new church.

It was an interesting story.

We know that God is the One that saves. He is the only One. But we still must share the gospel. We must go. We must pray. We must send.

twice told

“What is so tedious as a twice-told tale?” asked Homer in his Odyssey. We really don’t mind a twice-told tale if the teller has the skill to make it sound new each time it is told.

Wiersbe, W. W., & Wiersbe, D. (1986). The elements of preaching : The art of biblical preaching clearly and simply presented (39). Wheaton, Ill.: Tyndale House Publishers.

It takes lots of study and prayer to prepare a message and preach it so that it sounds new each time. We have heard the story. What is there in the story that will be used by God to change our lives.

the technique of modern salesmanship

In our eagerness to make converts I am afraid we have lately been guilty of using the technique of modern salesmanship, which is of course to present only the desirable qualities in a product and ignore the rest. We go to men and offer them a cozy home on the sunny side of the brae. If they will but accept Christ He will give them peace of mind, solve their problems, prosper their business, protect their families and keep them happy all day long. They believe us and come, and the first cold wind sends them shivering to some counselor to find out what has gone wrong; and that is the last we hear of many of them….

By offering our hearers a sweetness-and-light gospel and promising every taker a place on the sunny side of the brae, we not only cruelly deceive them, we guarantee also a high casualty rate among the converts won on such terms. On certain foreign fields the expression “rice Christians” has been coined to describe those who adopt Christianity for profit. The experienced missionary knows that the convert that must pay a heavy price for his faith in Christ is the one that will persevere to the end. He begins with the wind in his face, and should the storm grow in strength he will not turn back for he has been conditioned to endure it.

By playing down the cost of discipleship we are producing rice Christians by the tens of thousands right here on the North American continent.

“Lord, I suspect this is getting much worse even since Tozer’s day. In our emphasis on growth and success we may indeed be guilty of producing rice Christians. Deliver us from that error. Amen.”

(A.W. Tozer, Tozer on Christian Leadership, August 30)

Get Training to Plant a Church

We believe in the ministry of the local church. Fact is that the term local church is redundant. It is our goal to see like minded churches started all over the world. Currently our 14 missionaries (all members of Vision Baptist Church) are aggressively being used to do that in several countries and around the world.

The most effective and the biblical way to reach an area is by planting a church. That is how we will reach more people with the gospel message of Jesus Christ.

We have noticed that newer churches reach new people much more effectively.

All churches should grow and reproduce. We have taught for years that for a church to truly be indigenous it must reproduce. If we teach that for our missionaries and churches overseas we must do so here.

We want to invite you to an internship that will prepare you to start a church. We will help equip you biblically, as well as in leadership and hands on experience with others that are actively involved in church planting.

Vision Baptist Church and Missions as well as BCWE use a “life on life” model to prepare men and women to do the work God has called them to do!

You can listen to a recent Church Planting Conference to learn more about church planting.

We are asking God to allow us to plant reproducing churches all over Fulton County, Georgia as well as other parts of the USA. We are also at the same time planting churches in many parts of the world.

We are a local church based ministry. We are very strong on discipleship, team work, Expository Preaching, and World Evangelism.

If you are interested in helping us plant churches we ask you to learn all about us that you can. You can do that via this blog, austingardner.net, visionbaptist.com, and bcwe.org. Listen to the preaching, the music, see the passion, understand the Vision, know our missionaries both staff and strategic partners. Visit our services. Talk to someone on the team but learn all you can.

Pray about coming to Vision. Get involved in a church that is going to plant churches and really wants to help you make a difference with your life

To plant churches with us you must embrace our philosophy, values, goals, and truly have a Vision heart! We want you to have time to get to know us and become a real integral part of the church and team!

We use discipleship and personal accountability in our work. Each of us has to be humble enough to serve and not feel threatened if another teaches and directs us as we learn.
d
The Our Generation Training Center will become the place that each intern learns the heart, the philosophy and the Biblical methods that are used.

If you are interested you can contact us with your questions. If you feel that God would have you be part of something like this please know that you will be asked to fill out an application and then move to the area and find a job. Then you will get involved in every ministry possible as you prepare to become a church planter!
